It’s amazing how many baby items there are available. It’s overwhelming; especially the first time you have a baby. With Declan, I thought I went a little minimalist, but the truth is there were items I registered for and received that I later learned were not necessary. The best gift new parents can get – diapers and wipes. You’ll definitely use those!
So this second time around, I’m reallyyyy trying to keep it down to the basics. Especially since, although we live in a bigger home, it’s still apartment-living. No extra storage room, no garage – plus clutter stresses me out.
I kept my most-used items that were still usable from when Declan was a baby (gosh, I can’t believe he’s not a “baby” anymore *tear). And there are some that I’ll be re-buying, like bottles. Those get gross. There was no way I was keeping them.
Below is my version of a minimalist baby registry for a second baby (or first!); mind you, there are some items on here that I wouldn’t get again if I didn’t already have them.
Tommee Tippee Bottles | Declan had no trouble with these. I’m hoping Baby Girl won’t either. I’m starting off with just 3 of the larger bottles. By the 3rd month, the small ones were useless. Plus I still have the Tommee Tippee bottle warmer.
Tommee Tippee Explora Bibs | You don’t need more than 2 of these feeding bibs. The trough part is funny but let me tell you, that saves so much cleaning. I still have both of these from Declan – so they last!
Feeding Spoons & Bowl | You only need one pack of these and they last forever. I’m also re-using these. As for the suction bowl; one good one is also good enough. I bought these plates and bowls from IKEA recently for Declan.
Gerber Burping Cloths | They call them “cloth diapers” but really they’re also the best burping cloth/clean everything cloth you can get. They’re durable and I like that they don’t have a pattern. I still have the ones I used from Declan and they’re in good condition.
Pura Kiki Bottle | Declan has two of these that he uses everyday. It has been my favorite sippy cup by far. Easy to clean, stainless steel and it converts from baby bottle to sippy cup to snack container. Genius.
Baby Bullet | I already have this and used it a lot with Declan. But a regular food processor and little containers will suffice also.
Nursing Cover (multi-use) | The nursing cover I used for Declan was a little too small so I bought myself this really neat, multi-use cover. It works as a nursing cover, car seat cover (when baby is sleeping), shopping car seat cover and eventually a scarf for me. Can’t go wrong with this one.
ON THE GO
Ergo Carrier | I’m re-using Declan’s and I’m actually excited to be able to use it again. Sure I can strap on Declan to my back, but what toddler wants to be carried? I think this time around the Ergo will be a lifesaver to the fullest.
Sit/Stand Double Stroller | For Declan we had (and still have and use) the Britax B-Agile stroller which we love. We still have the baby car seat and plan on using it (since it hasn’t expired yet). I was thinking of getting a double stroller for both of them. First I was eyeing the Britax B-Ready just because it’s compatible with the car seat; but we would still have to buy the second seat. It just seems too complicated of a stroller for my liking and would cost more than the regular Britax B-Agile Double stroller. So after a lot of research, we decided to try the Joovy Caboose Ultralight for a couple of reasons. One – it’s compatible with the Britax car seat; two – I like that Declan can sit and stand in the back (great for their age difference); three – the price is great.
Skip Hop diaper bag | I still use this for Declan but I’ll probably transition him to a backpack since he uses less things now. My favorite backpack diaper bag is just a backpack – Fjallraven Kanken Daypack.
Swaddle Blankets | I still have one swaddle blanket that I used with Declan; but I decided to get this 3-pack of Oh Joy’s line at Target. Three for that price is great; and the designs are really cute.
Soft Blanket | San Diego isn’t a very cold place, so I just have one soft blanket for Baby Girl right now. Declan has another print design of this same blanket and loves it; so I just got a girlish one for Baby Girl.
Crib | We’re re-using Declan’s crib. Since our last home was so small I chose a mini crib. But I love the size in this room as well. We have the Babyletto Origami mini crib in brown. I don’t think they have that color anymore but I’m sure there are other similar brands/styles. My favorite part about the crib is that it has wheels to move around and that it folds flat.
Sound Machine | So we still have both the sound machines we used for Declan. I love these. The Gentle Giraffe is nice because it can strap on to the stroller – it has both white noise and soothing jungle sounds. Tranquil Turtle – my favorite (actually, all of ours) – we still use today. This one is also a light that makes the room like like the ocean and it makes ocean sounds. Sooo relaxing, even for adults. These items aren’t necessary, but they sure are helpful and soothing.
Sleeping Sack | I have one organic cotton sleeping sack that Declan used that’ll I’ll be re-using. They say infants shouldn’t sleep with loose blankets in the crib; my paranoid side behooved me to purchase one. Honestly, it’s comforting to know that baby is safe and warm.
Bath Tub | Sticking with the most affordable one – no need for a fancy one. They outgrow it quick and the tubs tend to get gross. The one thing I do like in a tub is that sling for when they can’t sit up yet. As for the towels, the multi-packs seem enticing, but one good hooded towel is enough. The robes are really cute, but not necessary. Honestly, why would you leave a baby in a robe, especially with no diaper on?? Or at least that’s my take on it. My favorite towel that I’m still using with Declan is from IKEA. As for the washcloths, I’m a fan of a loofah instead.
IKEA changing table (the one we have is discontinued) and changing pad (I love this pad because you can wipe it easily). If we didn’t already have a changing table, I might have opted out of getting one. The floor or bed work just as well for a changing surface.
Aveeno | I used Aveeno products for Declan and I plan to use them again, especially for the first year when baby skin is sensitive. Aveeno products are safe and affordable. The key is affordable; there are so many other baby hygiene brands that are great but just a little too expensive. I love Burt’s Bees; but I only get it when it’s on sale.
Health care kit – the most used item in this kit is the nail clipper. I’ll probably just buy Baby Girl her own nail clipper.
CLOTHING & OTHER
Gerber Unisex Onesies | The best onesies, in my opinion, for Baby to wear under their clothes. I love that they come in packs of 5.
So far I’ve only bought baby girl some basic onesies and baby leggings – mostly all from Old Navy or wherever I saw baby clothes on sale. I’m only buying what I need as I need it; so that I don’t have to give away clothes that she never wore.
Sophie the Giraffe | If you’re baby doesn’t have one, you’re not a cool parent. Just kidding (not really). I still have this and just have to sterilize it.
Pacifier | This time around I want to try this Natursutten pacifier and see if Baby Girl likes it. I like that it’s made of natural rubber and it has great review. I also bought her this cute pacifier clip in mauve.
A couple of other things that we still have that I’m re-using:
